Domino Gauge was developed for the Strategic Outsourcing Division of IBM Global Service. Once Domino Gauge was ready for production deployment in 1Q99, it was implemented on over 200 Domino mail and web servers in multiple IBM Universal Server Farms around the world for over 50 customers. Domino Gauge is designed to collect historical server performance and availability statistical data, compute average and peak values, and produce HTML & JAVA service level agreement/objective web reports for Domino servers. Domino Gauge is a Domino database application, designed with ease of implementation and manageability in mind. The self configuration logic coded into the agents in Domino Gauge make it an economical and low maintenance application. Configuring Domino Gauge on a new server to monitor is as simple as creating a new replica of a database. In an effort to minimize the expense of data storage that historical reporting demands, the thousands of detailed hourly documents are purged after ninety (90) days, while the smaller concatenated reports are stored for two (2) years.
Domino Gauge was developed to collect and compute statistical data using automated scheduled agents. The agents that collect data from a monitored server are written to run on all servers and will start running automatically on an hourly and daily basis. Since agents are written in this manner, the configuration required to implement Domino Gauge is minimal, and support is less complex. Agents running on a "monitored server" occupy minimal server resources, and terminate within seconds after execution. Reports are created/updated by scheduled agents running on a central "monitoring/collection server". A replica of the Domino Gauge database (for a group of "monitored servers"), is "push" replicated (every 60 minutes) from a single monitored server to a designated "monitoring/collection server". Scheduled agents execute average and aggregate computations on the collected data -- updating reports every 1 to 4 hours. Service Level reports, current within the past few hours, are accessible using a web browser.
