Disclosed is a method for a low insertion force jack. Benefits include improved design flexibility, improved usability, and ease of implementation.

Background

              The conventional jack design has a rigid construction (see Figure 1). With this design, the optimized mating force is difficult to achieve. Redesigning the jack using a rigid construction would require clearance in the housing to reduce the force while the plug is being pushed in. The clearance area would require a complex mold design for the housing and increase the cost for the component.

              Requiring a high force for mating the plug to the jack could cause confusion to users. They may think that the plug is in position but in actuality, the plug is not fully inserted, which results in signal integrity issues.

Description

              The disclosed method is a low insertion force jack. A self-force adjustable, spring-like gripper mechanism has sufficient force to enable the mating of the male plug with ease of insertion (see Figure 2).

              The key elements of the method include:

•             Spring element design on the gripper mechanism

•             Reduced force during the mating of the plug and jack

              The disclosed method provides a similar function as the conventional solution but with improved design flexibility and improved usability. The disclosed method can incorporate conventional tooling, which provides ease of implementation.
