An automated mechanism is illustrated and described to remove the old drill from and insert the new drill into a spindle. As shown in Figs. 1-3, pressurizing cavity 9, through line D, compresses two collets 1 together with the drill 7 in it. When the collets assembly is closed and becomes rigid, then all pressure forces (Image Omitted) cancel each other, making this assembly to float in all directions. The 45Œincoming air jets 12 strike on the collets at the recesses 10, turning this assembly at a low rpm to reduce the spindle collets/drill friction when removing or inserting the drill. This assures a smoother drill removal or insertion. The dowel pin 2 is designed to center the holes concentrically in the open condition of the collets, and also keeps them packed together.

This assures a smoother drill removal or insertion. The dowel pin 2 is designed to center the holes concentrically in the open condition of the collets, and also keeps them packed together. Air inlets 17 and exhaust ports 11 constitute an air bearing for the collets to eliminate friction with housing 5 and 6.

If for any reason the drill should not insert properly into the spindle hole, the drill would slip down on the drill reset piston 4, blocking the pressure port 13. As a result, there is no pressure sensing in the pressure line C to signal a correct insertion, but an improper drill insertion indication. Upon the spindle retracting upwardly, the drill is reset to a predetermined height, on piston 4, by pressurizing cavity 14 through line A, to be ready for the second trial.
