An air-cellular material (e.g., Bubble Wrap material) comprises biodegradable resin, such as polylactic acid (“PLA”). The material may also comprise poly(butylene adipate/butylene terephthalate) copolymer as a flexibility modifier.
Disclosure
The invention is directed to an air-cellular material (e.g., Bubble Wrap material) comprising biodegradable resin, such as polylactic acid (“PLA”).
One aspect of the invention is an air-cellular material comprising a blend of:
i) PLA; and
ii) poly(butylene adipate/butylene terephthalate) copolymer, such as Ecoflex resin by BASF. This aspect provides a softer more flexible product.
Biodegradable air-cellular bubble material may comprise PLA, such as from NatureWorks PLA 4042D. A modifier, such as a starch/coupling reagent, may be added to the PLA blend to make it more flexible. Ecoflex resin, such as Ecoflex F-BX7011 may also or alternatively be added as the flexibility modifier material. The loading may be from 25 to 75 weight %. Antiblock, e.g., up to 5 weight %, may also be used.
PLA bubble material
D1 discloses that Bubble Wrap material can be made from PLA resin. It also notes that pure PLA may be relatively inflexible, and suggests the use of starch with a coupling reagent to improve the flexibility. D1 is “New Packaging Products Degradable Bubble Wrap” by Bixler, Ott, and Wang, http://www.chem.mtu.edu/~whanbing/NewBubbleWrap.htm has a date of April 15, 2005 on the face of the document.
D2 discloses “starch-based bubble wrap” in a discussion of biopackaging and also discusses the production of PLA from genetically-modified crops (Section 27).
