Publication Summary

Nowadays, a lot relataional databases are published on the Semantic Web via D2RQ mappings. However, manually to define D2RQ mappings is becoming more and more cost consuming. In this article, we disclose a method and system to generate D2R mappings based on ontology semantics.

A Method and System to generate D2RQ Mappings based on Ontology Semantics

1. Background: What is the problem solved by your invention? Describe known solutions to this problem (if any). What are the drawbacks of such known solutions, or why is an additional solution required? Cite any relevant technical documents or references.

The present invention relates to the topic of publishing relational database on the Semantic Web.

D2R Server [1] is a tool for publishing the content of relational databases on the Semantic Web, a global information space consisting of linked data. Data on the Semantic Web is modeled and represented in RDF (Resource Description Framework). By using a customizable D2RQ mapping to map database content into this format, D2R Server allows the RDF data to be browsed and searched - the two main access paradigms to the Semantic Web. D2R Server's Linked Data interface makes RDF descriptions of individual resources available over the HTTP protocol. An RDF description can be retrieved simply by accessing the resource's URI over the Web. The SPARQL interface enables applications to search and query the database using the SPARQL query language over the SPARQL protocol.

However, manually to define D2RQ mappings is becoming more and more cost consuming. For instance, publishing service metadata from WebSphere Service Registry and Repository (WSRR) to Metadata Web needs to define at least 100 class maps and 500 property bridges (5000+ lines). So far, we expect a method and system to leverage the mapping definition, provided by a relatively small amount of original mappings. To our best knowledge, there is none known solution in the literature.

Now to use the method and system as proposed in this

disclosure, publishing WSRR service metadata needs only to define about 20 class maps and 100 property bridges (1000- lines). The rest of class maps and property bridges are all generated automatically, which reaches to an approximate 80% effort off.
