TECHNIQUES FOR VISUALIZATION AND ANALYSIS OF BOREHOLE SURVEY AND RELATED DRILLING DATA
Introduction / Summary of the Invention This document describes a number of computer‐based techniques for import, visualization, analysis and
update of borehole survey and related data in Schlumberger's Petrel® software. The requirement is to
view and analyze the borehole survey data in the context of an earth model. Imported data and analysis
needs to be persisted to the Petrel® project for later reuse.
Related Art The oil and gas industry has recognized importance and advantages of three‐dimensional visualization of
drilling and well operational information in the context of an earth model. Advanced three‐dimensional
visualization techniques allow for faster decisions and reduce incidents to maximize drilling efficiency.

2. Existing Tools/Systems/Services
Petrel® Software ‐ a Schlumberger 3D and 2D interpretation and visualization software solution that is
capable of displaying borehole log as a colored varying‐width ribbon positioned alongside of a
borehole.|
PDV2 and PRT2 Tool ‐ Schlumberger SIS drilling data delivery and audit tool released in January 2009 as
a Petrel® Software plug‐in module. The tool uses the algorithm described in this patent for displaying
and analyzing drilling and real time data or well operation reports.
Detailed Description Drilling data related to borehole path design and analysis includes:
• Borehole plans (or proposals) consisting of a series of control points organized in sections as
well as the type of profile required to get to the next point or hit a target.
• Borehole markers consisting of a number of specific points in the borehole path indicating some
specific feature such as the top of a formation or the end of a casing string.
• Borehole surveys consist of a series of survey points or stations measured with a downhole tool
during the drilling process.
• Drilling targets represent a 3 dimensional volume modeled as a set of polygons to be intersected
by the borehole path. A drilling target maybe associated with one or more boreholes.
• Drilling alarms are defined by the Petrel® Software user and include a specific condition and an
